Sun Pictures is the world's oldest outdoor picture gardens! Constructed in 1903, the Sun Pictures building in Broome’s Chinatown originally served as an Asian emporium selling imported foodstuffs, clothing and other household goods to Broome’s culturally diverse community. Sun Pictures officially opened in December 1916, showing silent movies with live piano performances by local character 'Fairy', who delighted audiences with her romantic and melodramatic piano accompaniments. After decades of entertaining locals - and an unfortunate period of racially segregated seating and exclusion of aboriginals - the building was placed on the State Register of Heritage Places due to its local significance as a landmark of Broome. More recently, the theatre underwent undergone restoration and continues to screen films as well as being a museum that celebrates Broome's cultural and social history.
