ABOUT

Grouse is Aussie slang for great, fantastic or excellent.
Like 'ripper', 'ace' and 'sweeeet', grouse is an old school way of expressing joy.

Like, 'that's grouse mate!'

Grouse was first mentioned in the Sunday Times in Sydney in 1924 before the Popular Dicxtionary of Australian Slang made grouse an offical slang term in 1941. Grouse!

Ironically, grouse is most commonly associated with Sydney's southern frenemy, Melbourne.

Grouse—something good.
Sunday Times (Sydney), 27 April, 1924
Grouce, grouse, good, excellent.
S. J. Baker, Popular Dictionary of Australian Slang, 1941

G'day, were The Gents.

We tell stories in words, pictures and in person.

Our work spans writing, photography, illustration, art and design that is inspired by Australian popular culture and history. Grouse history!

We love finding grouse ways to celebrate this big, beautiful country we live in. And we know Australia like the back of our hand - we travelled more than 40,000 kilometres around the country in a 90s Tarago for our Signs of Australia photography book, as well as tons of holidays and road trips over more than 20 years together. We write about our favourite Aussie places for books, host walking tours and love to share our tips and tricks for exploring them like a local.

After running a successful Melbourne shop a decade of so ago, we decided to start Grouse Shop to show off a bit - like, show off our amazing collection of vintage Australiana and new and vintage Australian fashion. That you can now buy! But it'a more than a shop - it's an archive of Australian culutre over 50+ years. You're welcome.

We met in Melbourne in 2002 and lived there for years before making Tassie our home.
Our latest book, Naarm Melbourne Neighbourhoods was a labour of love, combining our words, pictures and design into a love letter to Melbourne. Dale's knowledge of this city is deep and comes from true connection to place. Brady's photographs of the city taken over 20+ years is a visual record of a city old yet ever changing.

We've written about our favourite Australian cities for travel books and magazines since 2009.
